A double row of mixed native hedging plants are planted, and protected with bio tree guards, in front of a bamboo fence.

Project

Oak Sleeper Wall and Hedgerow

Installing a stabilising sleeper wall and hedgerow replanting

Location:
East Budleigh

The aim of this project was to create a secure and easier to maintain boundary hedge alongside a public footpath. The old fence had become rotten and was leaning dangerously towards the footpath to a recreation ground. Large bushes and trees had overgrown the footpath, blocking light and restricting access. Also tangled within the vegetation was an old chain-link metal fence and broken concrete posts.

At one end, the garden was higher than the footpath, so we planned to install an oak sleeper retaining wall. On top of this, we would plant a mixed, thornless, native, wildlife hedge. We suggested a mixture of eight native plant species to provide colourful stems, flowers, and berries to benefit local wildlife. At the other end of the boundary line, we planned to build a solid post and rail fence. The post and rail framing would extend along the length of the boundary so we could secure some temporary bamboo screening. This would provide screening and privacy until the new hedge established, after which the screening and framing could be removed.

There were several challenges with this project – primarily related to access and safety. We needed to maintain safe access along the footpath for the public to the recreation ground at all times. In addition, we were also aware of power cables and services buried nearby too.

We carefully used a mini digger to remove vegetation and trees. Whilst we completed the work outside of bird nesting season, we still always check for wildlife.

We were able to use a tracked chipper to process most of the green vegetation on site, to be used as mulch by the client. We removed all the old timber and metal waste for recycling as we hold a Waster Carrier Licence. Once the site was clear, we set up lines, levels, and ground protection, to begin constructing the sleeper wall and fencing.

In additon to the work above, we also created a new concrete pad for the clients new shed. Also, in agreement with our client, and as a good-will gesture to the community, we re-built a rotten kissing gate that gave access to the footpath.

The customers (as well as the local community) were incredibly happy with the results, which continue to delight as the hedge thickens and establishes.
